The Write Room’s
Artist’s Pledge
I promise not to speak negatively of the stories/poems/essays/etc that are shared, either during workshop time or outside of classes/camps. The act of sharing one’s art is brave in itself. (There is always space for critical discussions, but making sure that people feel free to write and explore ideas during their time with The Write Room is imperative.) I also promise not to speak negatively about my own work; creative writing is a journey, and we are all free to make mistakes in here.
I promise to be inclusive and thoughtful in my work. Words hold great power. (A joke is not considered funny in here if it comes at someone else’s expense.)
I acknowledge that while there is lots of room for creative freedom in writing, I will work to avoid topics that might purposefully upset or offend others, and will refrain from crossing lines that might be considered inappropriate or hostile. (This includes humor related to bodies and threatening language).
*If a child is concerned about an idea they would like to explore in their writing being inappropriate, please bring it to a teacher and they’ll be happy to discuss it with them.
