The Write Room’s
Artist’s Pledge

I promise not to speak negatively of the stories/poems/essays/etc that are shared, either during workshop time or outside of classes/camps. The act of sharing one’s art is brave in itself. (There is always space for critical discussions, but making sure that people feel free to write and explore ideas during their time with The Write Room is imperative.) I also promise not to speak negatively about my own work; creative writing is a journey, and we are all free to make mistakes in here.

I promise to be inclusive and thoughtful in my work. Words hold great power. (A joke is not considered funny in here if it comes at someone else’s expense.)

I acknowledge that while there is lots of room for creative freedom in writing, I will work to avoid topics that might feel overly aggressive or harmful towards others and will refrain from crossing lines that might be considered inappropriate; this includes humor connected to body parts, bodily functions, or threatening language. *If you’re concerned about an idea you’d like to explore in your writing being inappropriate, please bring it to a teacher and they’ll be happy to discuss it with you.

I also pledge that I will not use Artificial Intelligence during my time at The Write Room (this includes for writing, editing, research purposes, story reviews, or any other capacity), and promise that any writing I do during my time at The Write Room will be my own, or occasionally, in collaboration with my peers. I will also refrain from using AI at home for edits on any work that is later presented through workshops, readings, or in any other function at The Write Room.

Creative writing is a time to maximize critical and creative thinking and The Write Room strongly believes in the lifelong benefits of slow attention, reflection, and discussion.
