Visual Poetry
from $60.00

Writers will work on erasure poetry, collage, and watercolor in this three week workshop where visual art and poetry meet. We will study the work of writers and artists like Tom Phillips, Susan Howe, Mary Ruefle, Barbara Kruger, and Jonathan Safran Foer. Each week will also include a short workshop of new writing.

Price includes all art supplies needed.

Chicago Writers - Adults

Writers will dig deep into the work of Gwendolyn Brooks, Saul Bellow, Barry Pearce, Carl Sandburg, Patricia Frazier and others in this hybrid book discussion/writing workshop. Writers will then have the chance to create and share their own stories and poems about the city we live in and love.

Personal Narratives

Writers will explore personal narratives through the work of Joe Brainard, Mary Oliver, Ross Gay, Geraldine DeRuiter, Diane Seuss, and more in this two-week workshop. The first week will focus on personal narratives in memoir; the second week will focus on personal narratives in poetry. Writers will create both flash memoir and poetry pieces to be workshopped during our time together.

The Location

Bramble Arts Loft in Andersonville

The Write Room’s 2026 camps, classes, and workshops will be held at Bramble Arts Loft in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago.

All camps, classes, and workshops will be using both the conference room space and “the Berry” theater. Some may include daily neighborhood walks around the neighborhood and into local parks.

Please note: The Conference Room is not ADA Accessible and is up one flight of stairs. Please reach out if this presents a challenge for your student.

Small class size
All workshops/classes max out at 14 participants. Due to the small group size, classes and workshops will likely fill up quickly.

Waitlist
Because group sizes are small, we will create a waitlist as soon as a class/workshop reaches capacity. Once on the waitlist, you will be notified if a space opens up. If the waitlist grows large enough, we will open up an additional classes/workshops.

Class Necessities
All new students will be given a tote bag and notebook on their first day. Students will be responsible for bringing their notebooks and reading materials back and forth to their classes/workshops. Notebooks and writing utensils will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own notebook or pens/pencils as well. (Students who prefer writing on a laptop should reach out to the school about this in advance.)

Policies

Behavior Policy
The Write Room promotes positive, inclusive behavior and reserves the right to remove students for unsafe actions, including physical aggression, discrimination, harassment, threats, bullying behavior, or substance possession. We also ask that all students familiarize themselves with our Artist’s Pledge.

Cancellations
All class cancellations will be subject to an $80 administrative fee; all workshop cancellations will be subject to an $15 administrative fee. No refunds can be provided on workshops or classes less than one month before the start date.

Workshop Transfers
All workshop transfers will be subject to a $10 fee. If transferring less than two weeks before the camp start date, the fee is $15.
