Youth Classes

In this creative writing class, we’ll work on everything from short stories to poetry, all while learning about character, point of view, setting, and dialogue. The students will explore what makes a piece of writing compelling while trying out weekly prompts. Students will have the opportunity to workshop their writing in a safe, creative, and fun space where they’ll learn to trust their creative voices and take risks in their work. *All students will have the opportunity to read their work at a local bookstore.

The Location
Bramble Arts Loft in Andersonville
The Write Room’s 2026 camps, classes, and workshops will be held at Bramble Arts Loft in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. We will be using the conference room space and “the Berry” theater. Some will include walks around the neighborhood and into local parks.
Please note: The Conference Room is not ADA Accessible and is up one flight of stairs. Please reach out if this presents a challenge for your student.

Small class size
All workshops/classes max out at 14 participants. Due to the small group size, classes and workshops will likely fill up quickly.
Waitlist
Because group sizes are small, we will create a waitlist as soon as a class/workshop reaches capacity. Once on the waitlist, you will be notified if a space opens up. If the waitlist grows large enough, we will open up an additional classes/workshops.
Age Range
If your child is out of the age range for one of our classes/workshops, but they are still interested in our program, please reach out to the school directly. No two students are alike, and occasionally the school will make exceptions for younger students who show considerable passion and focus, have previous creative writing experience, or a strong grasp of story/writing concepts, etc. Also, if there is enough interest from an older or younger group of students, an additional class/workshop may be opened.
Class Necessities
All new students will be given a tote bag and notebook on their first day. Students will be responsible for bringing their notebooks and reading materials back and forth to their classes/workshops. Notebooks and writing utensils will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own notebook or pens/pencils as well. (Students who prefer writing on a laptop should reach out to the school about this in advance.)
Medication
The Write Room is not able to administer medication. All medication must be taken before or after classes/workshops. If on-site medical intervention is needed, an authorized pick-up person must come to administer the medication, or we need to have an action plan signed by the child’s doctor specifying that they can self-administer medication before class begins. (All information should be included in medical forms, which will be sent out before classes/workshops begin.)
Policies
Behavior Policy
The Write Room promotes positive, inclusive behavior and reserves the right to remove students for unsafe actions, including physical aggression, discrimination, harassment, threats, bullying behavior, or substance possession. We also ask that all students familiarize themselves with our Artist’s Pledge.
Cancellations
All class cancellations will be subject to an $80 administrative fee; all workshop cancellations will be subject to an $15 administrative fee. No refunds can be provided on workshops or classes less than one month before the start date.
Workshop Transfers
All workshop transfers will be subject to a $10 fee. If transferring less than two weeks before the camp start date, the fee is $15.
